PRIME TIME AVENGER 27DBS – Gray Tank Valve Replacement

Complete repair guide for the PRIME TIME AVENGER 27DBS – Gray Tank Valve Replacement.

Parts & Tools You’ll Need

Step 1: Diagnose Tank Valve Failure

Start by locating your gray tank access panel on the driver’s side exterior of the 27DBS, typically found near the wheel well. Open the panel and visually inspect the Valterra 1.5″ Gray Tank Valve for cracks, corrosion, or mineral buildup around the valve body and handle. Attempt to operate the valve handle—if it’s stuck, won’t turn smoothly, or leaks water when closed, replacement is necessary. Take photos of the current valve’s orientation and plumbing connections before proceeding, as this will guide your reinstallation.

Step 2: Drain Gray Tank Completely

Position your RV on level ground and locate the gray tank dump station or use a waste tote beneath the tank’s lowest point. Open the existing gate valve fully and allow all gray water to drain completely, which typically takes 10–15 minutes depending on tank fullness. Once drainage stops, leave the valve open to allow residual moisture to evaporate for at least 30 minutes. Dispose of collected wastewater according to local regulations—never dump gray water on the ground or in unauthorized locations.

Step 3: Remove Old Valve Assembly

Using your Gate Valve Removal Tool or adjustable wrench, grip the valve body firmly while turning the inlet and outlet connections counterclockwise to disconnect the ABS plumbing lines. You may encounter mineral deposits or corrosion; apply penetrating oil and wait 5 minutes if connections are stubborn, then try again. Once the valve is free, inspect the threaded ports on both the tank and the connecting pipes for damage or debris. Clean these ports thoroughly with a dry cloth and remove any old primer residue or cement fragments using a soft brush.

Step 4: Prepare New Valve and Fittings

Unbox your new Valterra 1.5″ Gray Tank Valve and check that all components are present, including the Tank Valve Handle Assembly. Dry-fit the valve into the tank outlet and the connecting ABS pipes to verify alignment and ensure there are no obstructions. Apply the Rubber Flange Gasket Seal Kit around the valve’s inlet connection point, pressing firmly to create a watertight seal. Do not apply ABS Primer or Solvent Cement yet—you’ll do this in the final assembly step to ensure proper cure time.

Step 5: Install Valve with Proper Sealing

Apply ABS Pipe Primer to the interior of the inlet connection port and the exterior of the valve’s inlet fitting, following the product’s specified wait time (typically 30 seconds). Immediately apply a thin, even bead of ABS Solvent Cement to both primed surfaces and push the valve firmly into the tank outlet with a slight twisting motion. Hold the connection in place for 10 seconds to ensure proper seating, then allow 24 hours of cure time before pressurizing. Repeat this priming and cementing process for any ABS pipe connections to the valve’s outlet, maintaining consistent application technique.

Step 6: Reconnect Waste Plumbing Lines

Once the ABS cement has fully cured, dry-fit your RhinoFlex Sewer Hose + Elbow Kit to the valve outlet to confirm proper alignment and ensure the elbow points downward at a slight angle for optimal drainage. Hand-tighten all hose clamps to secure the sewer line, then use an adjustable wrench to tighten each clamp an additional quarter-turn—do not overtighten, as this can crack the valve outlet. Install the Tank Valve Handle Assembly onto the valve stem, ensuring it rotates smoothly through its full range of motion from fully open to fully closed. Verify that the handle is secure by attempting to wiggle it side-to-side; there should be no movement.

Step 7: Test Valve Function and Inspect for Leaks

Fill your gray tank halfway using the sink and shower drains, monitoring the tank level via your RV’s tank monitor gauge. Open the new valve handle completely and allow water to flow into your waste tote, observing the RhinoFlex hose for any leaks at the connection points or along the valve body. Close the valve and check for drips or seepage around the inlet seal and handle assembly—the valve should hold water with zero leakage when fully closed. Add Gray Tank Enzyme Treatment to the tank following the product’s dosage instructions, then perform one final drain cycle to confirm the valve operates smoothly under load and the plumbing system is functioning correctly.
