White smoke out of the exhaust followed by a shutdown is the classic unburnt-fuel signature: the dosing pump is delivering, the fan is moving air, and the ignition source is not doing its job. On these heaters that source is a glow plug — a resistive element that heats the chamber enough to light the first charge of atomised diesel. Glow plugs do fail. But the part that fails more often sits directly behind it, and swapping the plug without dealing with it buys you a few weeks.
Reading the smoke
- White smoke, no ignition, flame-out code. Fuel present, no light-off. Glow plug, screen, or a chamber packed with carbon.
- White smoke that clears into normal running. Slow light-off. The plug is weakening or the screen is partially blocked — it still works, but it is on the way out.
- Black smoke. Different problem entirely: too much fuel or not enough combustion air. Look at the pump volume and the intake before the plug.
- No smoke, no ignition, no tick. Fuel is not arriving. Start on the pump side instead.
Testing the plug
A glow plug is a heating element, so the meaningful electrical test is continuity. With the plug out and the heater powered down, put a meter across its terminals on the resistance range:
- Open circuit / no continuity → the element is broken. Replace it.
- Some low resistance → the element is intact. Compare against the figure in your unit’s documentation rather than a number from a forum; ratings differ between 2kW, 5kW and 8kW plugs, and a ‘good’ reading on one is a failed reading on another.
- Reads fine but the heater still will not light → the element is intact and the problem is mechanical. This is where the screen comes in.
Continuity only tells you the element is not severed. A plug can pass this test and still be too carbon-crusted to transfer heat, which is why the visual inspection matters more than the meter reading. A meter with a proper resistance range gets you the electrical half of the answer; your eyes get the other half.
The combustion screen is usually the real culprit
Behind the glow plug sits a fine metal mesh whose job is to wick and vaporise fuel so it burns rather than pools. It loads up with hard carbon over hundreds of cycles, especially on units run mostly at low output or shut down without a cool-down cycle. A blocked screen starves the flame front no matter how hot the plug gets.
Pull the plug and look into the chamber. A healthy screen looks like coarse steel wool. A failed one looks like a solid black disc. Replace it — do not try to clean it and reuse it, because the mesh loses structure once the carbon has sintered into it. Kits that include the plug, its sealing gasket and a fresh screen exist precisely because these parts wear as a set.
While you are in there
- Check the exhaust for restriction. Carbon builds in the pipe and silencer too, and back pressure causes exactly the same slow-light-off symptom.
- Look at the intake for crushed or blocked tubing.
- Run the unit at full output for 20–30 minutes periodically once repaired. Low-output-only operation is what carbons these heaters up in the first place.
If the exhaust pipe has gone brittle or the silencer rattles when you tap it, replace that run while access is open. A stainless exhaust pipe and silencer is inexpensive, and a compromised exhaust is a carbon monoxide problem, not just a performance one.
