Step 1: Leak Detection and Documentation
Water infiltration in Class C motorhomes stays hidden until real damage takes hold, which is exactly why your first move has to be a careful interior hunt—ideally during or right after heavy rain. Move systematically through the cabin, checking the ceiling from wall to wall, examining every light fixture opening, looking into overhead storage, and paying close attention to the areas directly beneath the roof-mounted air conditioner unit and ventilation penetrations. Watch for staining (brown or yellowish marks), soft or spongy ceiling material when you press on it gently, peeling fabric or wallpaper, visible moisture beading on surfaces, or that telltale musty odor that signals mold. Shine a flashlight into cabinet backs and behind fixtures where your eye can’t normally reach. Take dated photos of each suspect location and sketch them on a simple diagram so you have a clear record of where water has entered. Keep in mind that water running along the underside of the roof can travel several feet horizontally before gravity pulls it down through the interior—so the visible damage point may be nowhere near the actual roof breach.
Step 2: Exterior Roof Inspection and Preparation
Pick a clear day when temperatures fall somewhere between 50 and 90 degrees Fahrenheit—this window gives sealant the best conditions to cure properly. Step 3: Cleaning and Surface Preparation
New sealant can only stick to a clean surface—this step separates repairs that hold for years from repairs that fail in months. Step 4: Removing Failed Sealant
Wherever old sealant has cracked, separated, or pulled loose from the surface, you need to remove all of it before laying down fresh material. Use a plastic putty knife or sealant scraper and work slowly and patiently, peeling away every trace of the old material without gouging the roof underneath. If the old sealant has hardened into something rock-solid, an RV-specific adhesive remover can soften it enough to scrape—but test any chemical on a hidden spot first to confirm it won’t damage your roof type. After you’ve scraped down to bare surface, clean the area one more time with roof cleaner to wipe away any oily residue from the sealant you just removed. Step 5: Applying Eternabond Tape to Damaged Areas

For any tears, cracks, or areas where the rubber has deteriorated badly, tape should go down before you apply any sealant. Cut the tape so it extends at least 2 inches past the damage on every side—a 4-inch-wide roll works for most job. Peel back the release liner on one end about 2 inches, line the tape up exactly where you need it, and press down firmly. Then gradually peel away the rest of the liner while pressing the tape down as you go, working from one end to the other to keep air pockets from forming. Once it’s fully positioned, use a hand roller or J-roller to apply steady, even pressure across the entire tape surface, paying special attention to the edges where tape is most likely to lift in the wind.
Step 6: Applying Lap Sealant to Seams and Penetrations

Apply lap sealant along the full length of each seam, covering the seam itself plus about an inch on each side. The front cap junction, where the fiberglass meets the rubber, deserves a thick, resilient seal because that area flexes significantly while you’re driving. Once your sealant is laid down, walk back and inspect your entire job from several angles, looking for thin spots, gaps, or bubbles. The sealant will settle and level out over the next 24 hours, but keep the rig parked and don’t go up on the roof during that time. Mark your calendar to inspect and re-seal the roof annually to stay ahead of deterioration.
