Step 1: Diagnosis and Preparation
Start by actually confirming the pump is dead rather than just starved of power or current. Grab a multimeter and check your battery—it needs to be sitting at 12.0 volts minimum before you do anything else. Top off your freshwater tank completely and make sure your city water inlet is disconnected; running both at once will muddy your diagnosis fast. Find your pump switch—usually mounted on the monitor panel near the galley or entry door—and flip it on. Turn on a faucet somewhere inside the rig to create demand. A working pump will hum or cycle audibly within the first few seconds, and water will flow. Hear nothing? See nothing flowing? Check your 12V fuse panel first. A blown fuse is far more common than a dead pump, and it’s a 30-second fix instead of a replacement job.
Step 2: Locating and Accessing the Water Pump
On a Nexus Triumph, the pump lives near the freshwater tank—usually in a front pass-through storage area or tucked behind a cabinet panel somewhere near your convenience center. You’re hunting for an access panel held by Phillips screws. Bring a flashlight; these spaces are dark caves. Once you eyeball the pump, notice it’s mounted on rubber feet. Those feet matter—they’re vibration isolation, and you’ll want to preserve them. Before you touch a single wire or fitting, photograph the pump from multiple angles. Seriously. These pictures will be your roadmap when you’re reassembling in bad lighting with tired hands. Then lay down towels or position a bucket underneath the pump area. Water lives in those lines, and it will come out when you break the seals.
Step 3: Electrical Disconnection
Kill the pump switch at your control panel first, then pull the pump fuse from the 12V distribution panel. Now you’ve got power isolated—nothing can fire up while you’re elbow-deep in the wiring. The pump itself will have two wires: positive (usually red) and negative (usually black or white), connected via bell cap twist connectors. Grab the base of each connector and rotate counterclockwise. If corrosion has seized them tight, don’t wrestle—cut the wires about 2 inches from the pump body instead, giving yourself enough length to strip and reconnect to the new pump. Use wire strippers to remove roughly 1/2 inch of insulation, being careful not to shred the copper inside.
Step 4: Water Line Disconnection
With power handled, turn your attention to the plumbing. The pump has two fittings: an inlet from your freshwater tank and an outlet to your interior plumbing. These are usually 1/2-inch plastic or brass with either compression or barbed connections. Open a faucet inside first to bleed off any residual pressure. Your towels and bucket should already be positioned because water is definitely coming out now. Hand-turn the fittings counterclockwise first; if they’re stubborn, use an adjustable wrench, but don’t force them or you’ll strip plastic threads. Once loose, look at the O-rings on each fitting. Cracked, flattened, or visibly deteriorated O-rings get replaced right now—reusing them is how you end up chasing leaks later.
Step 5: Physical Pump Removal
Electrical and water lines are now free. The pump itself is bolted to the floor with typically four sheet metal screws (#10 or #12) running through those rubber isolation mounts. Remove these screws and put them in a labeled container—you’re going to reuse them. Lift the pump out carefully; residual water may drip from the pump housing. If your old pump has a strainer screen (usually white or clear plastic) on the inlet side, remove it and save it. You’ll be transferring this strainer to the new pump to maintain debris filtration on your system.
Step 6: New Pump Preparation and Installation
Unbox the replacement pump and inventory the parts—check for mounting hardware, strainers, and O-rings. If your original strainer exists but the new pump doesn’t include one, that strainer is moving to the new unit. Coat all O-rings lightly with silicone grease to ease installation and ensure sealing. Set the new pump into the exact location the old one occupied, verifying that inlet and outlet ports align with your existing water lines for easy reconnection. Feed the mounting screws through the rubber isolation feet and into the floor, tightening until snug. Don’t crank these—the goal is firm seating with the rubber still giving slightly. Over-tightening flattens the isolation mounts and actually increases vibration noise instead of dampening it.
Step 7: Plumbing Reconnection and Testing
Reconnect your water lines to the new pump—inlet to inlet, outlet to outlet. Reversing these doesn’t just prevent the pump from working; it can damage the internal check valve. Hand-tighten first, then add a final quarter-turn with a wrench. Resist the urge to over-tighten plastic fittings; it cracks them or crushes O-rings. Before you reconnect electrical power, test for leaks: turn on city water to a low pressure setting and watch all three connection points (inlet, outlet, and pump body seams) for several minutes. Dry, no weeping? Good. Now reconnect your electrical wires—positive to positive, negative to negative, using fresh connectors. Replace the fuse and switch the pump on. You’ll hear it cycle as it builds pressure. Open each faucet one at a time and let water run until the flow steadies and air spits stop happening.
