Step 1: Leak Detection and Documentation
Water finding its way through a Class C roof often goes unnoticed for months because the staining spreads horizontally inside the structure before pooling anywhere visible. Start your inspection indoors during or right after rain, moving methodically through every ceiling area: light fixtures, overhead storage, the cabinets above the dinette, and most critically the areas directly below your air conditioner and roof vents. Watch for water stains (yellowish or brownish patches), soft or spongy spots when you press the ceiling gently, loose or peeling wall coverings, standing water droplets, or that distinctive musty odor that signals mold beginning to establish itself. Use a flashlight to look inside and behind overhead storage units. Take photos of each problem spot and sketch a simple diagram marking the location—water travels along the roof structure before dropping through, so your leak source might sit several feet away from where the water actually appears inside.
Step 2: Exterior Roof Inspection and Preparation
Pick a window of dry, windless weather with the thermometer between 50–90°F so any new sealant cures properly. Use a heavy-duty ladder with stabilizer feet and never work a wet roof or in gusty conditions. Apply the cleaner per the label, usually with a soft brush, let it sit for 5–10 minutes to break down oxidation, then rinse thoroughly with clean water. Step 4: Removing Failed Sealant

Once you’ve cleared the old material, run the roof cleaner over the area again to remove any greasy residue the old sealant left behind. If you find any membrane damage—tears, punctures, or areas of severe degradation—you’ll need to patch those with Eternabond tape before applying sealant.
Step 5: Applying Eternabond Tape to Damaged Areas
Eternabond RoofSeal tape is a heavy-duty, pressure-sensitive product that creates a permanent seal over membrane damage and works as a base layer before lap sealant in high-stress areas. For any cracks, tears, or severely compromised roof material, Eternabond goes down first. Cut the tape to overlap the damaged spot by at least 2 inches on all sides—4″-wide tape handles most BT Cruiser repairs. Pull back roughly 2 inches of the backing, position the tape directly over the damage, and press firmly to secure the initial contact. Peel the backing gradually as you press the tape down, working from one end toward the other so air bubbles don’t get trapped underneath. These seams come sealed from the factory but degrade, and re-sealing them prevents water from running down inside the cavity. Lay a bead of lap sealant the length of each seam, centering the bead so it covers the joint itself plus approximately 1 inch of rubber on either side. Where seams intersect or terminate, slow down and apply extra sealant—those junction points see movement and stress and fail first. Don’t forget the front section where fiberglass cab-over material meets rubber roof—that transition flexes significantly during highway miles and requires a thick, supple seal. Step back and review your work from different angles once you’ve finished laying sealant, checking for missed spots, thin patches, or trapped air. The sealant will self-level and settle over the next 24 hours, but keep the rig parked and avoid any roof traffic until it’s fully cured. Plan to walk the roof and reseal annually to catch deterioration before it becomes a problem.
